Black Panther Scores 12 Critics' Choice Award Nominations

Black Panther earned twelve 2018 Critics' Choice Award nominations, the second-most of any film. Ryan Coogler's entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was widely acclaimed upon its release back in February, breaking box office records and seizing control of the zeitgeist. Many were impressed with its heady and relevant themes, which helped Black Panther transcend its traditional genre trappings and deliver a story rich with substance. As a result, a narrative building all through the year is whether or not Black Panther can break new ground and earn a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

Fan have passionately campaigned for their favorite blockbusters in years past to no avail, but it's becoming increasingly likely Panther has a realistic shot. Already, the comic book adaptation has been recognized by several organizations, including the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and even the Golden Globes. Now, it adds more accolades to its impressive list with a strong showing at the Critics' Choice Awards.

Today, the Broadcast Film Critics Association (hat tip Variety) named their nominees for 2018. Yorgos Lanthimos' period drama The Favourite led the pack with 14. See the full list in the space below:

Many of these titles will be familiar to cinephiles who have been following the awards race closely. Films like A Star is Born, Roma, The Favourite, Vice, and even Black Panther continue to solidify their Oscar hopes by picking up several key nominations in the prominent precursors. There's obviously plenty of time for things to change before the Academy weighs in (Oscar nominations do not come out until January), but viewers more or less now have a general idea of what movies are definitely in contention for the top prizes. There tends to be a lot of correlation between the Critics' Choice and Oscars. Last year, eight of the former's 10 Best Picture nominees were in the running for the latter.

Admittedly, there aren't too many surprises on this list, but there was one movie in particular that got a much-needed boost. After largely being ignored by other awards bodies, Neil Armstrong biopic First Man received 10 Critics' Choice nominations, giving it a fighting chance to work its way back in the Oscar race. The acclaimed drama certainly isn't the frontrunner some thought it might be after the fall festivals, though it still may be able to sneak into Best Picture on one of the final slots. It'll be interesting to see how everything plays out from here.
